An Analysis of Informal Caregiving and Labor Market Outcomes

Abstract
With rapid population ageing, the need of caregiving for the elderly is increasing. Also, informal caregiving plays an important role in caregiving for the elderly. However, with the rapid decline in the working-age population, labor market exit from the working-age population due to family care can be a burden on employment and economic growth. Using data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA), this study examines the effects of informal caregiving on caregiver¡¯s labor market outcomes. To investigate the causal influences of informal caregiving, we implement fixed effects model, which can control for unobserved time invariant factors by exploiting the advantages of a panel data structure. The estimation results reveal that informal caregiving has negative effects on the probability of working and on annual working time. However, it has no effects on caregiver¡¯s working hours and hourly wage. The negative impacts of informal caregiving on labor force participation are salient among women, unpaid family workers, less-educated workers, and caregivers in higher-income households.
